It was cold- in the 30's (F) and very windy- when I went to the shore of Lake Superior to look for buff-breasted sandpipers. Monarch Butterfly July 21, 2021

My favorite butterflies to photograph are hairstreaks. I spent two days last weekend looking for them and saw none. I saw a Monarch and used an in-camera custom white balance to make the background colors look soft. I blurred the flowers in the background to make the photo look even softer and dreamier.

I wanted to photograph the Michigan lighthouses covered in ice, so I planned a January trip to Michigan. I also hoped to see long-tailed ducks; I checked E Bird every day and saw that the ducks were reported in the lighthouse canals where I would be going.

Some of my favorite photo images are those with simple compositions, and even desaturated tones, those with streaked clouds and smooth water. Even though these images are easy to look at, it is not always easy to achieve this look.
I use a neutral density filter to make the water look smooth. When the water is smooth, reflections are more defined.
